Introduction to Projection Mapping

Sarah Wolozin is the Director of Open Documentary Lab at MIT, which has been at the forefront of exploring tools for immersive storytelling. Projection Mapping is an immersive technique to augment public space by projecting imagery onto surfaces such as buildings, rock formations, or statues to transform objects into dynamic narratives. Through the bending of light, visuals are precisely mapped to fit the exact spatial contours of physical objects, creating illusions of movement, depth, or texture. Wolozin will present and discuss examples of projection mapping from around the world.
Sarah Wolozin is a research scientist and director of the MIT Open Documentary Lab. She is the co-founder of the Independent XR Distribution Coalition, co-founder and editorial director of Docubase, and co-founder of the Co-Creation Studio and Immerse. Her publications include Creating Community in Hybrid Festivals, AI, Embodiment and the Perception of the Real, and Prototyping the Future: How Artists Reveal the Future of Media.
Wolozin has long had an interest in exploring new platforms for storytelling and social change. Before arriving at MIT, she worked on award-winning documentaries and educational media for a wide variety of media outlets including PBS, WGBH, NPR, websites and museums.
Greenhouse Media are exhibition technologists who have transformed public buildings into story canvases through projection mapping. They will introduce workshop participants to accessible tools, technologies, and apps for projection mapping, focusing on practical knowledge and best practices for new users.
