A retrospective glance at films and filmmakers who have shaped our visual culture.

Peter Nicks is an award-winning director/cinematographer known for immersive camera work, cinema vérité style, and films that explore complex social issues through intimate, character-driven non-fiction narratives. His recent feature documentary works include Anthem, following composer Kris Bowers’ journey to create a new American anthem, and Stephen Curry: Underrated, the coming-of-age story of a Bay Area basketball superstar. A graduate of Howard University, and with a Masters from the University of California, Berkeley School of Journalism, Nicks is the founder of Open’hood, a nonprofit media organization that uses storytelling to create more active and connected communities, and, along with Ryan Coogler, co-founder of Proximity Media.

The Wolf

Peter Nicks’ first hour-long documentary and most intimate project, The Wolf is a fearless chronicle of the filmmaker’s own drug addiction, trafficking, and ultimate incarceration during his college years. Touching on the societal issues that led up to that time, Nicks presents candid interviews with those who went through the experience with him: his adoptive parents, friends, and even the judge who sentenced him. Originally broadcast on ABC’s Nightline, the film counters simplistic views propagated by the “War on Drugs.”

Homeroom

Homeroom follows a group of seniors at Oakland High School into spring 2020. Already facing hardships of poverty, displacement, fear of deportation, and intimidation from law enforcement, the students are derailed by COVID and rocked by the national trauma of the police killings of George Floyd and so many others; yet Homeroom celebrates the tenacity of today’s youth and their efforts for empowerment and justice.

The Waiting Room

Shortlisted for the Oscar, The Waiting Room spends 24 hours in the emergency room at Oakland’s Highland public hospital, a nationally recognized training ground for medical interns and residents. Peeling back the layers, patients feel manipulated, staff are overwhelmed, and the system is exhausted under the burden of limited resources in this contemporary portrait of healthcare and people who consistently feel its impact.
