"Why I Love You: Meet The Ultimates" is a short documentary about The Ultimates, a vocal group formed by childhood friends in 1970s West Philadelphia under the mentorship of visionary Evetta Valentine. After recording the ballad “Why I Love You” at the legendary Sigma Sound Studios and releasing it on Valentine’s independent label, the song faded into obscurity and the members of the group went their separate ways, only for the song to be rediscovered decades later nearly 3,000 miles away within the California Chicano lowrider scene, where it became a cherished cultural gem. Through intimate interviews with group members Monica Thornton and Debra Gunn Herbin and archival material, the film explores ambition, sisterhood and rediscovery and highlights how one timeless song connected two distant communities and gave The Ultimates a long-overdue second chance.
