Through the use of never-before-seen archives and the voices of those who lived through the tumultuous period of 1960s Montreal, True North explores the pivotal events of a moment that impacted the global movement for Black liberation by centering the Congress of Black Writers and the Sir George Williams Affair.

Michèle Stephenson is a documentary filmmaker who was born in Haiti and now lives in Brooklyn. With Joe Brewster, she’s directed documentary shorts including The Changing Same (2018) and Black Girls Play: The Story of Hand Games (2023) and the features American Promise (2013) and Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project (2023). Her solo directorial efforts include the feature Stateless (2020). True North (2025) is her latest film.
