Labor Beat
Based in Chicago, Labor Beat, the longest-running cable TV series in the US. Broadcasting since 1986, it offers programs that counter the commercial media’s bias against labor. The series emerged from WCFL, a labor radio station started in 1928. It is a valuable and unique resource in the union struggle, creating a rare niche in cable television for well-produced pro-working class features and news. Labor Beat operates under the motto “News for working people, by working people,” and operates as an independent rank-and-file labor media organization. A volunteer organization, it reports on the untold stories and issues of the working class such as the anti-war movement in labor, the battles against privatization in education, educators’ strikes at charter schools in Chicago, healthcare, immigration, minimum wage sector organizing, newspaper strikes, nurses, Teamsters, textile workers, and workers’ struggles in higher education. Labor Beat's TV episodes are posted online at Laborbeat.org and disseminated on Facebook and YouTube.
