Filmmaker Peter Nicks will discuss the range of factors that precede filming, from access negotiation to relationship building and camera and lens choices. The workshop will also explore different ways of approaching the direct cinema style of documentary filmmaking,, and the practice of editing (which can radically inform one’s approach to filming). Participants will come away with a basic understanding of the practical craft, philosophy, and ethics of observational cinema; how the practice has evolved; and examples of films that use the form in an impactful way.
Registration for the Special Learning Session includes admission to the Body of Work screening of Homeroom at 7:00 PM.
