A Good Eye: Capturing Joy

In his latest film, Chicago-based Media Renaissance Man Floyd Webb examines the largely untold history of Black photography in Chicago. From the photographers who documented the Great Migration for the Chicago Defender to the lens of Bob Black, who stood on the burning West Side in1968 and pointed his camera at history, A Good Eye illustrates how image-making in the city has never been neutral. The film moves from groundbreaking figures such as James Van Der Zee and Gordon Parks to contemporary photographers, including Tonika Johnson and Lee Bey. 
 

Floyd Webb is a filmmaker, curator, essayist, and new technology investigator and infrastructure researcher largely focused on Black and African Diasporan cinema. Since beginning as a community documentary photographer in the late 1960s, his media work has been connected to activism including with the Chicago chapter of the Black Panther Party. He is the founder of the exhibition initiative Blacklight and the educational platform Blacknuss Network.
