Scribe Seeks Production Facilitators for the 2026 Precious Places Community History Project
Scribe Video Center, a non-profit media arts education organization, is seeking documentary production facilitators to work with community groups participating in the Precious Places Community History Project.
The Precious Places Community History Project is a community history project inviting members of the Philadelphia area's many neighborhoods to document the buildings, public spaces, parks, landmarks, and other sites that hold the memories of our communities and define where we live. Precious Places teaches the documentary production process to participating groups, fostering projects authored by those who intimately know the featured neighborhoods.
Responsibilities include:
1. Providing instruction to members of the community organization in the skills necessary to produce a short video documentary, including production management and editing.
2. In consultation with the community group, seeing that the project proceeds in accordance with Scribe’s overall production and completion schedule.
3. Guiding the group in logging and transcription procedure, as well as in the completion of an editing script (paper edit) prior to editing.
4. In consultation with the community group, supervising and executing the edit of the video using Adobe Premiere software.
Participating videomaking facilitators will spend an estimated 80 to 120 hours over the term of the project (generally 2-4 hours a week or 3 meetings a month) over an eight-month period beginning in late May 2026.
Production facilitators will receive an honorarium of $2500.00 for their work.

Scribe Seeks Humanities and Social Science Facilitators for the 2026 Precious Places Community History Project
Scribe Video Center, non-profit media arts education organization, is seeking faculty members in the humanities and social sciences, as well as advanced graduate students in the humanities/social sciences, to work with community groups participating in the Precious Places Community History Project.
The Precious Places Community History Project is a community oral history project inviting members of the Philadelphia area's many neighborhoods to document the buildings, public spaces, parks, landmarks, and other sites that hold the memories of our communities and define where we live. The Precious Places teaches the documentary production process to participating groups, fostering projects authored by those who intimately know the featured neighborhoods. Neighborhood residents carry out research and production in each group with the help of a humanities/social science scholar and an experienced filmmaker.
We are presently seeking the assistance of humanities scholars and social scientists from the fields of history, urban studies, anthropology, folklore, and sociology to work as facilitators on Precious Places. We hope that you will consider collaborating with us on this exciting and groundbreaking project. As a humanities facilitator, you will help guide the research process, discuss the process of creating oral histories, advise on interview technique and strategies, and help identify sources of archival images and other corroborating materials.
Participating humanities and social science facilitators will meet about three times a month for four months with the groups, guide the group through one day of primary shooting, and consult during the editing process. Participating facilitators will spend an estimated 75 to 100 hours over the term of the project (generally 2-4 hours a week or 3 meetings a month) over an eight-month period beginning in June 2026.
Humanities and Social Science Facilitators will receive an honorarium of $2000.00 for their work.

DOCUMENTARY HISTORY PROJECT FOR YOUTH - APPLICATIONS DUE MARCH 1, 2026
Scribe Video Center, a non-profit organization, is an arts education center that provides instruction in video, film, audio and other forms of digital media production. Founded in 1982, Scribe works with emerging and mid-career artists, as well as with members of community organizations, who wish to make use of video as an artistic medium and as a tool for progressive social change. "Scribe" is a metaphor for the use of digital time-based media as the modern medium to record significant contemporary concerns and events.
Scribe makes use of digital video technology to document issues and ideas affecting diverse economic and cultural communities, create media works that comment on the human condition and celebrate cultural diversity. Scribe Video Center encourages new approaches to visual form and language in an effort to further the aesthetics of video movie making.
Scribe Video Center is currently seeking an instructor for the 2026 Documentary Project for Youth History Project, an after-school and summer workshop for middle and high school students. Instructors are experienced independent digital video artists in the Philadelphia area who help workshop participants research, write, shoot and edit a documentary on some aspect of Philadelphia's social history.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Develop a curriculum that allows for both solid media production skills building of student-workers and the creation of works of high aesthetic quality;
• Instruct the student-workers in all aspects of digital video and audio production, ensuring that they are adequately trained in production skills (camera, lights, sound, etc.), production planning, research processes, use of archival materials, how to work with scholars and other consultants, and other activities necessary to produce a successful documentary
• Identify local humanities scholars who will assist the student workers in the research and understanding of their documentary topics;
• Ensure proper care and maintenance of production and post-production equipment used by the student-workers
• Complete projects, final reports, and curriculum in a timely manner.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED INCLUDE:
• BA/BFA required, MA/MFA preferred, and documentary film/video production.
• Experience of teaching youth documentary and developing curriculum
• Skilled in: HD Video Production, Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro
• Strong planning and personal organization skills
• Experience working with diverse populations of high school students
• Demonstrated commitment to Scribe’s mission and educational philosophy
• Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
• Proficiency in all aspects of the production and post-production process
• Flexibility, resourcefulness, and a sense of humor
COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE
Compensation to be determined based on experience. The program runs from April to November. The instructor will spend approximately 5 hours a week with the group of student workers during the school year and 10 hours each week during the summer portion of the project. In addition to time for planning, the Instructor will also spend additional time as is required to maintain a reasonable production schedule and to complete the documentary on time.

Teaching Artists Wanted
Some of Philadelphia’s most outstanding media makers have taught and presented works at Scribe. We create a venue for experienced media makers to share their skills with emerging artists at our workshops in West Philadelphia and in community media production projects throughout the Philadelphia region. We are looking for talented artists with solid skills in videography, sound recording, editing, animation and motion software, web design, and AR/VR production. Most of our instructors/facilitators have MFAs and/or have produced a solid body of creative work. Our hourly rate for teaching is comparable to area colleges.

2026 Street Movies! Call for Works
Street Movies! is a free, public screening series that is curated and produced by Scribe Video Center in partnership with neighborhood-based organizations in the Greater Philadelphia region. We are looking for well-crafted, thought-provoking work of any genre, including family-friendly pieces. We screen a wide selection of documentary, narrative, experimental, animation works, and more. Filmmakers receive an honorarium if selected, and work may be screened at multiple sites throughout the series. Films should be 30 minutes or less in length.

Freelance Photographers Wanted
Scribe Video Center seeks work-for-hire photographers to document community media projects. The photographer will attend production planning meetings and document community-based productions throughout the Philadelphia area. We are asking for behind-the-scenes production photos, as well as publicity stills suitable for newspaper, printed brochure, and web-based promotion. Scribe will pay $175 per shoot date for a minimum of ninety minutes per shoot and a minimum of 100 digital images.
