Scribe Video Center Program:
The Community Visions program teaches documentary video-making skills to members of community organizations in Philadelphia, Chester and Camden (NJ). A powerful way to document community concerns, celebrate cultural diversity, and comment on the human condition, Community Visions is a part of Scribe’s mission to explore, develop and advance the use of video, film, audio and interactive technology as artistic tools and as tools for progressive social change.
Project Facilitator: Dina Mendros and Roxana Walker-Canton
Film Summary:
An informative look at adolescent sexual health by an eclectic group of Philadelphia teens and teen peer educators of the Youth Health Empowerment Project. The video was collaboratively made with Y-HEP teen volunteers who powerfully deconstruct myths ("You can't get pregnant your first time."), address common concerns, and give useful, experience-based advice to their peers.
A remarkably realistic, funny and thought provoking role-play about a boyfriend and girlfriend (well played by William Baptist, currently working as Y-HEP's drop-in center manager, and Sasha Vasquez) alone at home negotiating their differing desires is interwoven with candid interviews of young adults, whose views and experiences are contextualized with vital statistical information. This documentary is an invaluable educational tool that will provoke discussion and help teens deal with this all-pervasive issue. The video is still used by Y-HEP and is also part of the Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania video catalog.
Youth Health Empowerment Project (Y-HEP) is a project of Philadelphia FIGHT that offers a comprehensive range of health promotion and youth development programs using a harm reduction approach to at-risk youth.
