Scribe Video Center Program:

The Community Visions program teaches documentary video-making skills to members of community organizations in Philadelphia, Chester and Camden (NJ). A powerful way to document community concerns, celebrate cultural diversity, and comment on the human condition, Community Visions is a part of Scribe’s mission to explore, develop and advance the use of video, film, audio and interactive technology as artistic tools and as tools for progressive social change.

Film Summary:

Say bienvenidos to this video that lovingly details the work of Southern New Jersey's largest Hispanic human service agency. The Hispanic Family Center of Southern New Jersey has offered a one-stop shopping buffet of holistic social services to members of the Camden, NJ-area Hispanic community since 1976. Staffed by bilingual and bi- and multicultural employees who have first-hand knowledge of the concerns of its first, second and third generation Hispanic program participants, HFCSNJ staffers and clients truthfully lay bare the needs, struggles and triumphs of its clientele.
 
As the video notes, the five sub-agencies under HFCSNJ's umbrella offer many services, including programs for senior citizens, prevention and outreach services, afterschool and summer youth programs, substance abuse treatment programs, family counseling and mental health outpatient services, as well as employment and job readiness development training.
 

Lingistic concerns play a large role here, as echoed by a Latina client who ruefully states, "No English, no job." But assisting clients with insufficient or almost nonexistent English language skills can do more than help them find employment. Helping clients navigate the language barrier can lead to more financially rewarding work, help a woman become self-sufficient enough that she no longer has to depend financially upon an abusive spouse, or simply help a parent who needs to make a complaint to her child's school. Today HFCSNJ still uses the bilingual video, subtitled in both English and Spanish, to introduce new clients and potential funders to its work.

Hispanic Family Center of Southern New Jersey (HFCSNJ) is a United Way agency based in Camden, New Jersey. For over 30 years, HFCSJ has worked to provide the region's Hispanic community with a broad range of culturally relevant social services and advocacy programs that promote and encourage empowerment and self-sufficiency.
