Scribe Video Center Program:

The Precious Places Community History Project is a community oral history project inviting members of the Philadelphia region's many neighborhoods to document the buildings, public spaces, parks, landmarks and other sites that hold the memories of our communities and define where we live. Precious Places teaches the video production process to participating groups, fostering projects authored by those who intimately know the featured neighborhoods.

Film Summary:

Christian Street YMCA-Sharing our History captures the experiences of current members who have been a part of the Christian Street YMCA dating back to the 1950s as well as recent members.  From segregation to racism, community impact to a diversified neighborhood, the Christian Street YMCA has a rich history to share and to preserve.  The story reveals the effect that the Great Migration had on individual members of African American families, who visited the YMCA.   That heritage continues to enlighten Christian Street YMCA members even today, because of its continuing reputation as a safe haven for African American children and a place for opportunity and growth for all.
