Farwell, America (formerly titled I'm Afraid of Canadians) by Bilal Motley (USA, 2025, Running time: TBD)

Through generations of progress followed by backlash, many African Americans consider leaving the United States to live abroad. With that in mind, Bilal Motley and his family visited Toronto over 6 times in 3 years intending to move there. They grapple with whether to stay and fight for justice in the United States while their visits reveal Toronto’s imperfections. The pivotal 2024 elections suggested a particular urgency as Motley engaged with the Kamala Harris campaign and voters in his hometown of Chester, Pennsylvania and elsewhere. This is a work-in-progress presentation of Motley’s personal documentary.

Bilal Motley is an award-winning media creator based in the Philadelphia area who explores class and race in his filmmaking. His works include Midnight Oil, Quarantine Kids, and Trash & Burn.
