Scribe presents three films by Billy Woodberry, a key figure in the movement of Black independent filmmakers known as “the L.A. Rebellion." Woodberry will be in attendence.

Marseille Après La Guerre (USA/Portugal, 2016, 10:30 min) 

Bless Their Little Hearts (USA, 1983, 80 min) 

Marseille Après La Guerre is a portrait of dockworkers in Marseille after World War II, and a reflection on the political awakening of legendary African filmmaker Ousmane Sembène. Bless Their Little Hearts addresses the social and cultural impact of mass unemployment through the story of one couple’s struggle to make ends meet. This newly restored masterpiece by Woodberry was written and photographed by Charles Burnett.

A fascinating portrait of Bob Kaufman (1925-1986), one of the Beat Generations’ most overlooked artists, the film is a journey into the ferocious beauty of Kaufman’s work, and his insistence that poetry is fundamental to humanity’s moral survival.

About Billy Woodberry

Billy Woodberry is a key figure in the nexus of Black independent filmmakers known as “the L.A. Rebellion.” His film Bless Their Little Hearts received two awards at the Berlin Film Festival in 1984 and was placed on the National Film Registry in 2013. Woodberry has tought at CalArts since 1989.
