In the town of Enfield, North Carolina, White authorities blew a siren, signaling Blacks to clear the down- town streets, an oppressive practice adopted to maintain White supremacy. From the narratives of Willa Cofield, her former students, and civil rights organizers, The Nine O’clock Whistle tells the story of the dramatic cultural shift that rocked the segregated town in the mid-1960s.

Willa Cofield and Associate Producer Karen Riley both share deep roots in Enfield, North Carolina. Cofield produced an award-winning documentary, The Brick School Legacy (2003) with Scribe Video Center in Philadelphia. Riley has a longtime history of telling other people’s stories as a former newspaper obituary writer.
