A Workshop by Professor Renee Hobbs, Founder of the Media Education Lab, Temple University
Many middle-school and high-school students are visual learners and video content can be engaging and motivating. Non-fiction video genres (including news, documentary, user-generated content and even reality TV) can help students deepen their understanding of their communities and the world. Digital media tools make it easier than ever for teachers to incorporate documentaries and non-fiction video into the curriculum.
In this lively, hands-on workshop, you'll learn the latest instructional practices on using all types of non-fiction video in the classroom--- both as "texts" to analyze and as tools for students' creative composition. Learn practical strategies to incorporate simple but powerful video production activities with only one computer and just one classroom period. Promote critical thinking and communication skills and use media in ways that address PA and district standards in English language arts, history and social studies, and the fine and performing arts. Lesson plans and assessment rubrics help you use what you learn immediately to create a vibrant learning environment in your classroom for your students.
