Julie Dash is a legend in the independent film world and an inspiration to a generation of filmmakers, in particular to women and people of color. Her groundbreaking film Daughters of the Dust (1992), was the first feature film directed by an African-American woman to receive a broad theatrical release. Her other works including Illusions, Four Women and Praise House are considered classics of independent and feminist cinema. She has received multiple Emmy nominations for her work, an NAACP Image Award, honorary degrees and retrospectives from cinema techs and festival internationally. She currently has a gallery show, Smuggling Daydreams into Reality, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.
