Writing Radio Drama

Character, plot, story, description, soundscape, dialogue, these and more are the elements that combine in the author controlled medium of dramatic radio.

This radio scriptwriting workshop will guide workshop participants through the process of creating short radio plays for WPEB. Participants should come to this workshop with a story idea for a topic or issue relevant to their community, and be prepared to get dramatic!

Learn the skills to be a community news reporter!

How do you uncover the news? How do you know if a story is important? How do you produce a radio news story – quickly and accurately? Workshop participants learn the craft and technique of radio journalism by researching, producing and editing short news or feature stories about West Philadelphia for broadcast on WPEB. The workshop culminates in a live radio broadcast on WPEB featuring news reports produced by workshop participants.

Introduction to Digital Sound Editing

DATES: Tuesday January 19, 26, February 2, 9 TIME: 7:00 – 9:00 PM (Fall 2009-2010)

Fee: $85. Free to members of the WPEB 88.1 FM Community

Using computers to edit sound! After you’ve done your interviews and made your recordings, learn how to cut them down to size and fit them together into one seamless piece of audio. This workshop will introduce the basics of Audacity, a free, open source audio editing program.

Our Daily Bread: A Community News Practicum

DATES: Wednesday, October 28, November 4, 11, 18, December 2, 9 TIME: 7:00-9:00 PM (FALL 2009)

Fee: $95. Free to members of the WPEB 88.1 FM Community

Journalist Shenid Bhayroo directs this audio production workshop to help participants develop the skills to be a community journalist and produce radio documentaries. The workshop topic is, “Where can we find fresh, healthy foods in West Philadelphia?” Over the course of six weeks, workshop participants learn research and interview techniques, field recording and audio editing, while creating a finished radio documentary, to be broadcast on community radio station WPEB 88.1 FM.
