Learn to how create a website for your project with easy-to-use and free online tools! This class is a survey of accessible Open Source tools and management systems for working with text, audio, images and video on the web. Students will understand how to build websites for diverse content needs. This workshop will guide participants through the steps of creating a blog and then look at the process of adding moving images to their sites. Come with ideas, text, images, digital video and prepare to experiment and create!
Adobe PHOTOSHOP Working with Layers

An overview of the use of layers, one of Photoshop’s most powerful features.
Understanding how to work with layers starts with understanding some basics about what layers are, what their capabilities are, what functions are in the layers palette, and how to locate all that you need to apply basic layer power. Emphasis will be placed on individual student projects both for photographic manipulation and graphics. Basic knowledge of Photoshop required.

Intro to HTML and Web Design

Learn concepts of basic web design and how to upload content using the FTP uplink process.
This workshop provides an introduction to creating a web site and provides instruction in HTML, the programming language used to create documents for display on the Internet. The workshop will also demonstrate some of the free tools and programs available to help you create your own website or blog. Bring texts, digital images and ideas and be prepared to experiment. Familiarity with PC or Apple computers is helpful.

3D Digital Animation: Intro to Autodesk Maya
DATES: Tuesdays, December 15, 22, 29, January 5, 12, 15 TIME: 7:00 – 9:00 pm (Fall 2009-2010)
3D digital animation and computer graphics (CGI) are becoming a standard ingredient in filmmaking. This hands on workshop will demonstrate essential concepts and practices of 3D digital animation using Autodesk Maya, the leading software used by filmmakers, gamers and virtual reality modelers to create 3D characters, models and visual effects. Participants will learn basic modeling processes and techniques in this project - based course by developing work based on simulating aspects of the Philadelphian urban space. While this class will primarily focus on the use of 3D animation for film and video it will also cover the possibilities of this digital framework for other media, such as computer games and print media.
Virtual Reality Narratives of Urban Spaces with Tim Portlock

Tim Portlock began his art making as a community-based muralist and studio painter. After discovering the Internet, he saw technology as a means to create socially engaged projects illustrating the cultural and societal changes American urban spaces have undergone since the end of the industrial era. In this master class Tim will share excerpts of his current digital work which includes virtual reality interactive narratives and 3D simulations of historic spaces depicting post-industrial cities. The imagery he creates synthesizes traditional media and new media to show the relationships between changes in technology, how people form communities, and how people conceive a communal history.

Shooting and Preparing Video for the Web

Video on the web is every where but good video on the web is harder to find. This workshop will introduce participants to ways of shooting video specifically destined for the web and then prepare your media to be uploaded for the world to see. Participants will learn new media concepts and best practices, as well as practical and hands on techniques on how to shoot, compress, encode, upload and distribute your video and audio on the internet. The workshop will cover working with the major media formats such as Windows, QuickTime, Realplayer, and Flash.
