In this our 25th anniversary year we are pleased to welcome back former Scribe Program Coordinator, instructor, Street Movies! curator and Community Visions facilitator, Dorothea Braemer to teach this master class focused on first person narration for non-fiction films. In her own work she has exhibited an uncanny ability to strike the right tone be it quizzical, ironic or heartfelt as she relates her film’s story in her own voice. Thoughts of Michael Moore, Morgan Spurloch or public radio’s “This American Life” may come to mind. But Braemer will share how she goes beyond creating a character and finds instead an authentic voice. She will show examples of her work and discuss how she finds the right balance.

Watch her film 10 Documentaries About My Childhood

INSTRUCTOR: Dorothea Braemer is an active filmmaker and community-based arts administrator. By day she is the executive director of Squeaky Wheel/Buffalo Media Resources. By night she is a media artist, using short format video and film to explore personal and political topics. Her work is fueled by the strong belief that independent film brings together communities, empowers people, and connects ideas and initiatives across cultures and identities. Originally from Germany, she received her MFA in Film and Media Arts from Temple University. She is a contributor to Termite TV. Her most recent film 10 Short Documentaries About My Childhood will screen at Scribe on Friday, September 12.
