Shooting with the compact Flip camera and editing with Final Cut Pro, each student will produce a short piece investigating a subject of personal resonance and social relevance.
Past subjects have included racial identity, young motherhood, and cultural segregation. Diverse approaches are encouraged, from traditional documentary to lyrical essay. An emphasis is placed on “new media” distribution via YouTube, blip.tv, and other websites.

Learn how to produce a live radio show and how to think critically, experiment with digital technologies, and express yourself through community radio.
Learn how a radio studio works, from running the board, planning a show, being a host and DJ, producing short news spots, interviewing guests in the studio, field and studio recording to working with Audacity, the audio editing program. The workshop culminates in a two-hour radio broadcast on WPEB 88.1 FM, a new community radio station for West Philadelphia, with students performing every role.

Learn all about Scribe's programs for youth including the Documentary History Project for Youth, an after-school and summer program for youth enrolled in grades 8-12. Accepted applicants are paid a small stipend to research, write, shoot and edit a documentary film or series of short films. This workshop provides students with an introduction to the technical and aesthetic languages of video production. Introduction to Animation

Animation is the art of creating the illusion of motion through frame-by-frame manipulation. Join us for a hands-on workshop exploring different techniques of stop motion animation including mixed media, hand drawn, and cut paper. Participants will work in groups and on individual projects inspired by theme. No previous art or computer training is required, just a good imagination and some patience.

The election of Barack Obama, the tanking of the economy and the continuing wars in the Middle East mark an historical moment of both immense hope and deep crisis for us as individuals and communities. What’s going on with you in this time of unprecedented change? What are the issues that are having a major impact on you, your friends, schools, families, and communities? Tell the world, in your own voice, by producing your own video diary. You'll learn how to shoot video and record audio on the new compact Flip camera; edit your footage using Final Cut Pro and upload your video to an interactive map on Scribe's website.
CO-INSTRUCTORS:
Tristan Brown received a B.F.A. in Film/Video from the California Institute of the Arts in 2004. He has worked as an assistant to Academy Award-winning documentarian Barbara Trent and has taught media literacy and video production in Los Angeles and North Carolina. A West Philadelphia resident since 2005, he is currently a Technical Coordinator at Scribe.
Boone Nguyen, Scribe’s program coordinator, holds a B.A. in American Studies (Yale) and an M.A. in Ethnic Studies (UCSD). He has worked with the Asian Arts Initiative and the Prison Activist Resource Center in Oakland, CA. He recently wrote and directed Contested Terrains, a short video documentary about race and public space in South Philadelphia.

Youth Intro to Non-Linear Editing (Final Cut Pro)
DATES: Saturdays, November 8, 15, 22 December 6, 13, 20 TIME: 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM
This workshop is open to all young people ages 11 to 19.
Learn basic editing with Apple's Final Cut, an exciting and powerful non-linear editing program. This course will introduce the basics of the software and provide a strong foundation to get started from importing and logging video footage to editing and much more. Participants will learn to edit using found video footage in the public domain to create video mash ups. Basic computer knowledge is required.
