Ben Kalina: Environmental Justice Documentary
DATE: Wednesday, August 21: TIME: 7:00PM-9:00PM; SUMMER 2013
In this Master Class, Ben Kalina will discuss the consistent elements of producing an environmental justice documentary. How does your budget dictate the approach, your equipment, and your crew? How do you pick a subject? Or, if the subject has picked you, how do you choose the storyline? What is your perceived market and audience, and how does that influence how you design and when you begin your outreach? Are you considering traditional-, self-, or hybrid distribution? Is a feature documentary the best or only way to go? Ultimately, if your goal is to make a difference and to have an impact, what might that look like and what's the best way to make that happen? This workshop is intended for filmmakers at any stage of their project, from pre-production through outreach and distribution.
Ben Kalina's latest film Shored Up screens as part of Scribe's Producers' Forums series on Tuesday, August 20, 7PM at the International House Philadelphia
Gloria Morán: Transmedia Storytelling

DATE: Sunday, April 28; TIME: 1:00PM - 3:00PM; SPRING 2013
Currently on a screening tour, Gloria Morán's new documentary The Unique Ladies is introducing members of San Diego's only all-women lowrider club to audiences across the country. At the same time, these extraordinary women's stories are amplified by related content – photographs, testimonials, interview footage – that Morán developed for dissemination across diverse platforms.
Using The Unique Ladies as a case model, Morán will present strategies for developing, funding, and producing digital media projects for distribution through multiple digital media platforms. Topics will include how to
effectively collaborate with participants (usually dubbed “subjects”) to develop a compelling story; how to organize a successful crowd-funding campaign; how to use different delivery platforms to extend your story and broaden your audience; and how to produce, edit, and prepare content for delivery across multiple platforms including blogs, online photo- and video-sharing services, and social media sites.
Moran's documentary The Unique Ladies screens in the Filadelfia Latin American Film Festival 2013 on Saturday, April 27, 2:15PM at the International House and again on Sunday, April 28, 6:00PM at the Gershman Y.
