Since the graveyard’s first internment in 1902, when mourners gathered after dark to avoid white residents who had blocked the burial service the day before, Eden’s shifting relationship with its neighborhood has been as multilayered as its continued cultural and personal importance to African Americans in the region. Embraced by Puerto Ricans and Cubans who left their homes around Spring Garden and the Northern Liberties as those neighborhoods gentrified, El Centro de Oro is a growing space for festivals, murals, and cultural participation.
