Producers' Forum - Ovarian Psycos (USA, 2016, 72 min) & Fishermen Without a Sea (USA, 2016, 20 min) with Ruby Rich

Tuesday, October 25 at 7:00 PM
Cost:
$10, $7 Students/Seniors, $5 Scribe and IHP members

Ruby Rich, editor of Film Quarterly, presents two new documentaries, premiering in Philadelphia for the first time:

Ovarian Psycos (USA, 2016, 72 min) directed by Joanna Sokolowski and Kate Trumbull-LaValle

Fishermen Without a Sea  (USA, 2016, 20 min) directed by Lucas Bonetti

Directed by recent graduates of the UC Santa Cruz Social Documentation program, where Ruby Rich is a professor of film and digital media, the aesthetics of these films develop from their intention to explore critical community issues.  These are exciting films engaged with ideas as well as communities, and crafted to deliver perspectives and stories that are equally legible to their subjects and their audiences.

The “Ovas” are a group of young Latina women in East Los Angeles who find power and agency by banding together into a bicycle squad that fights for justice, visibility, and an end to domestic violence, all with passion and high spirits. Bonetti’s fishermen lament the state of Rio’s Guanabara Bay, made infamous by concerns over a polluted Olympics, but also navigate the audience through the disappearing beauty of the place they call home. Both documentaries are made with a great eye, sensitivity to place, and a determination to give voice to people outside the mainstream whose lives and struggles are more than worthy of attention.

A Q&A with Ruby Rich will follow the screening.
