What is at stake in film/television criticism at a moment when the blogosphere provides an overload of opinion and the mainstream media offers lessons in taste? B. Ruby Rich, Editor in chief of Film Quarterly and Professor of Film and Digital Media at UC Santa Cruz, brings her perspective to bear in a special session that offers a sounding board for ideas while talking through the principles that govern FQ today. Why this? Why now? Such questions govern the editorial process. Who will benefit and what ideas will surface? With the support of the Ford Foundation’s JustFilms, FQ has sought out engaged criticism relevant to today’s sociopolitical landscape and the representational strategies it merits.

Rich requests people to watch Ava DuVernay's 13th before the class.  It is on Netflix.
